Microsoft’s David Gauthier Shares Data Center Design Strategies at Datacenter Dynamics Converged

Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure has undergone a major cloud-scale transformation in recent years and David Gauthier has been a driving force behind some of its key changes. In his over 13 years at Microsoft through a variety of technical, program and project management roles, Gauthier has helped design and construct more than a dozen Microsoft data centers including Quincy, Washington, San Antonio, Chicago, Dublin and Boydton, Virginia facilities. On Friday, July 12, Gauthier will talk about this journey with fellow data center operators in a keynote and panel discussion at Datacenter Dynamics Converged: San Francisco (Marriott Marquis). Microsoft’s ITPAC – A Perfect Fit for Off-the-Grid Computing Capacity

Last November we announced our zero carbon Data Plant R&D project in Cheyenne, Wyoming. For a quick refresher, we’re placing a small container data center we call an IT Pre-Assembled Component, or ITPAC, at a wastewater treatment facility in Cheyenne. A natural bi-product of a wastewater plant is methane gas, which is typically flared off because it’s uneconomical to recover and convert to grid energy. At our Data Plant, we view this methane gas as an opportunity to provide a reliable power source to power a data center, and we decided to launch this project to test the concept and the capabilities.
