As Microsoft embraces a more thoughtful approach to powering the cloud, we’re looking at how we can reinvent the datacenter to be more efficient and use more sustainable energy sources. Very few cities have embraced the clean energy economy like San Antonio and its mayor, Julian Castro. In addition, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has demonstrated its commitment to a more sustainable energy future by establishing The Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute (SERI) under the leadership of Dr. Les Shephard, formerly of Sandia National Lab. With one of our largest datacenters located in San Antonio, we saw an opportunity to work with the city’s renewable energy community on the role of datacenters in accelerating the growth of clean energy. Three Ways Microsoft is Working to Transform the Energy Supply Chain

As Microsoft has embraced its identity as a devices and services company, we’ve also embraced energy’s role in powering the cloud. In the past 12 months, we have made significant progress on an energy strategy that will reduce the resources required to deliver cloud services, from our power purchase agreement with a 110 MW wind farm in Texas, to datacenter innovations like in-rack power generation and biogas-powered datacenters. Joining the OCP Foundation Board

Achievement Unlocked – Fuel Cell-Powered Computing

Last month we told you about a new idea to eliminate electrical distribution in the datacenter and improve uptime at the rack. Sounds great in principal but can you get it to actually work? I am happy to announce the successful demonstration of the concept at the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UC Irvine. We successfully demonstrated a rack of servers powered directly off the direct current (DC) output of the fuel cell stack, essentially stripping out most of the infrastructure found in the traditional data center energy supply chain. The result is a very efficient system with a radically simplified supply chain and fewer points of potential failure. Read More >>

Microsoft contributes cloud server designs to the Open Compute Project

On Tuesday, I will deliver a keynote address to 3,000 attendees at the Open Compute Project (OCP) Summit in San Jose, Calif. where I will announce that Microsoft is joining the OCP, a community focused on engineering the most efficient hardware for cloud and high-scale computing via open collaboration. I will also announce that we are contributing to the OCP what we call the Microsoft cloud server specification: the designs for the most advanced server hardware in Microsoft datacenters delivering global cloud services like Windows Azure, Office 365, Bing and others.
